The Third Session of the EU Society started with the information that the Society won’t be having the meeting in the following two weeks due to the Chuseok Holidays. 

In the first presentation titled “Italian Political History and the Berlusconi Controversy,” Maria Giuditta Natalini delved into the complex world of Italian politics and the enigmatic figure of Silvio Berlusconi. During the presentation, Maria provided an insightful overview of how the Italian political system functions, accompanied by an introduction to the current political leaders in Italy. A critical turning point in Italian political history was the “Tangentopoli” scandal during the 1980s and 1990s. Maria shed light on how this corruption scandal marked the end of the first republic and the inception of the second republic, reshaping the country’s political landscape. Before entering the political realm, Silvio Berlusconi had a life and career outside of politics. The presentation touched on his background and endeavors, offering insights into his transition into the world of politics. Berlusconi’s political career is characterized by multiple mandates, each accompanied by significant events that shaped Italy during his tenure. Berlusconi’s time in power was marred by scandals and trials, including corruption charges and conflicts of interest. Not limited to political scandals, Berlusconi faced scrutiny for his inappropriate behavior and involvement in sexual scandals. The presentation provided an account of these incidents, acknowledging their impact on both Berlusconi’s reputation and the Italian political scene.Even after his official roles in politics, Berlusconi remained an influential figure, engaging in various political activities. The presentation discussed his recent involvements and contributions to the Italian political discourse.

The following discussion was started by “What do you think is the reason he (Berlusconi), is still receiving support even after being convicted of multiple crimes?” During the discussion, students engaged in a thoughtful analysis of the reasons behind Berlusconi’s enduring support despite his legal troubles. The conversation also explored the types of individuals who supported Berlusconi and the values that underpinned their allegiance. Furthermore, there was a substantial discussion concerning the ongoing issue of corruption within the Italian political system, highlighting the need for continued scrutiny and reform.

In the second presentation titled "Dutch Innovations and Inventions: Shaping the Future," Jara Ank Fiddelers shed light on the Netherlands' unique culture, remarkable innovations, and influential inventions. The presentation commenced on a joyful note, by addressing the prevalent stereotypes associated with the Netherlands, encompassing iconic elements such as tulips, orange color, lantern-lit streets, Amsterdam, windmills, and cheese. But Jara showed us that the Dutch have offered much more to the world than these stereotypes -  from pioneering the microscope to spearheading Bluetooth technology and Royal Philips Electronics, the Dutch have left an indelible mark on technological advancements. The presentation further delved into Dutch contributions like CD and DVD technology, solar-powered transportation (currently in its pilot phase due to production costs), the Delta Works for sea control, and the innovative field of cultured meat. An intriguing aspect of the presentation was the narrative about "The man behind the tooth" - Danish King Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson, after whom the Bluetooth technology was aptly named. This historical connection added a fascinating dimension to the discussion.

The presentation sparked a thought-provoking discussion by initiating with a question: "What are your thoughts on cultured meat? Would you try it?" The ensuing conversation reflected a variety of opinions, showcasing both intrigue and reservations regarding this innovative culinary prospect. The discussion expanded to encompass Italy's stance on cultivated product production and import, bringing forth diverse perspectives. Further deliberation ensued regarding the European Union's approval of lab-grown meat and its potential environmental benefits. This important dialogue underscored the need for sustainable solutions to combat the significant emissions arising from traditional agriculture.

After the two insightful presentations and discussions all of the members were invited to have dinner together.
