Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the Discussion on Soft and Hard Law: The European Union Case

In EU Society’s last official meeting for the semester, Edna gave her presentation on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and how it is incorporated in soft and/or hard law with focus on the European Union. She explained that CSR is used as a part of soft law in Europe, which means that recommendations and incentives are given to companies to become more socially and environmentally sustainable, but there are few legally-binding regulations. She also described the implications in comparison to hard law. The members later discussed whether this is an efficient approach to promoting CSR and how the EU is doing in comparison to other countries. The meeting, as always, ended with some time for personal conversations and provision of dinner for all members.
