Dr. Chang-ryong Oh will be leading sessions 11 and 14. Dr. Oh is a research professor at KU Nordic-Benelux Centre and has been teaching EU studies to undergraduate students in KUDIS and graduate students in GSIS. In session 11, Dr.Oh talked about populism and the political landscape in Europe. He started the lecture by defining the key terms: populism, the people, the elite, and the general will.
Then, he covered the history of western populism, which stemmed from neo-fascism and metamorphosed into radically conservative and liberal political parties. In addition, he talked about the National Front party in France and its anti-immigrant and anti-semitic agendas of the past. He elaborated on how the rising populist sentiment fueled hostility against immigrants and refugees.
Dr. Oh led the session with powerful visual materials and intriguing questions. Students actively participated in the class and shared their opinions on the lecture topic.
