In the third session, Prof. Jae-Seung Lee lectured on Europe's energy policy and energy transition. By explaining the objectives of the EU's energy policy, he stressed the five closely related and mutually reinforcing dimensions of the energy union, namely solidarity, integrated internal energy market, energy efficiency, decarbonizing the economy, and competitiveness improvement. He additionally illustrated the intertwined complexity of Europe's dependence on Russian gas. As an example, he introduced the Nord Stream issue which is a very controversial agenda among Germany, Russia, the U.S., and Central Europe.
The latter half of the session focused on the European Green Deal. It aims to improve the well-being of people by making Europe climate-neutral and by protecting the national habitat. The deal should transform the EU's economy for a sustainable future and leave no one behind. He then described the European Green Deal missions in more detail including adaptation to climate change, soil health, and smart cities.
