Professor Sung-Hoon Park first introduced the speaker Professor Finn Laursen from University of Southern Denmark. Also invited to the special lecture are Research Professor Seung-Hwan Yoon from Nordic-Benelux Center of Korea University, and Counselor of Research and Innovation from the Embassy of Denmark to South Korea, Mr. Torben Orla Nielsen.
Prof Laursen began the lecture by looking into the previous referendum in Denmark regarding EU matters and providing the legal background of the Danish Constitution in order to better explain the Danish strategy and national debate. He examined the 1992 referendum on Maastricht Treaty in great details and explained the political and legal considerations, which led to the national compromise. Then, he shed light on the Danish strategy towards the Treaty of Amsterdam, the Euro, Treaty of Nice, Constitutional Treaty and the Lisbon Treaty which were explained in the Danish national political context. Despite the Euroscepticism amongst some domestic parties, Prof Laursen concluded that the Danes think the EU is a positive thing in general, and the support for the EU has been strengthened since the BREXIT.
Prof Laursen then took questions from the audience. The questions ranged from BREXIT and its implication on the European Integration process, Denmark’s immigration policy, and the national political parties respond to issues that concern the Danish public regarding the EU, as well as integration policy of immigrants. Finally, Mr Nielsen, the Research Counselor from the Danish Embassy took the floor and introduced the recent scholarship programme signed between the Danish and the Korean governments regarding the opportunities for Korean students to pursue degree programmes in Danish universities.
