-The EU's new regulation on the General Protection of Personal Data (GDPR) applies extra-territorially, where undertakings provide goods or services to individuals in the EU, etc. -The EU has consolidated the right to be forgotten in the Google v Spain case. -The EU prohibits transfers of personal data to countries without their appropriate level of protection, among which Japan. -The EU takes the stance that personal data must be protected even when anti-terrorism measures are taken. -There are differences between EU and Japan data protection approaches, and these gaps are to be overcome also for the success of the Japan EU economic partnership negotiation. |
