Prof. Šarūnas Liekis (a dean and a professor at Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas, and the Silesian University, Poland) explored Europe's energy policy, focusing on Lithuania's journey towards energy sustainability and security within the EU framework. Professor Jae-Seung Lee, Director of Ilmin International Relations Institute (IIRI), Jean Monnet EU Center at Korea University and Mr. Vilijus Samuila, Deputy Ambassador, Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania were also present at the lecture.
Prof. Šarūnas Liekis delivered an engaging lecture on Lithuania's approach to energy governance and sustainability within the EU framework. He emphasized the EU's three primary energy policy goals: energy security, competitiveness, and sustainability, highlighting how these goals shape national policies.
Prof. Liekis remarked on Lithuania's energy transition after decommissioning its last nuclear reactor in 2009, shifting reliance to imports and natural gas. He outlined the development of Lithuania's National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs), aiming for a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, 32% renewable energy use, and a 32.5% increase in energy efficiency by 2030.
Furthermore, Prof. Liekis discussed the challenges and opportunities presented by balancing these policy goals, securing necessary investments, and leveraging EU support. He noted the significance of EU funding and the potential for innovative energy policies within the EU framework. The lecture concluded with a focus on Lithuania's proactive stance in aligning with EU energy objectives, emphasizing the country's commitment to a sustainable and secure energy future.
