On July 14, 2026, the Ilmin International Relations Institute (IIRI) at Korea University and the Institute for Policy Studies (IPSI) jointly hosted a Diplomacy and Security Seminar entitled “Hungary’s Changing Political Landscape and Strategies for Korean Companies in the EU.”
The seminar examined recent political and economic developments in Hungary and their implications for the European Union and Korean companies operating in the country. Discussions addressed Hungary’s evolving relationship with the EU, the strengthening of EU environmental and regulatory standards, and the changing conditions for foreign investment.
Particular attention was given to the challenges facing Korean companies, including regulatory and compliance risks in the battery industry. Along with the need to move beyond low-cost manufacturing toward higher-value investment, research and development, innovation, and greater local engagement.
The seminar also considered broader opportunities arising from evolving EU industrial and economic security policies. Including potential cooperation in advanced technologies, defense, and joint research and development. Speakers emphasized the importance of adapting business strategies to Europe’s changing regulatory environment and strengthening partnerships with local and European stakeholders.
The programme featured presentations by Prof. Pesuth Tamas of Corvinus University of Budapest, KOTRA Economic Cooperation Team Manager Shin Ga-young, and former Ambassador Yoo Jung-hyun, followed by a panel discussion with experts from academia, diplomacy, and the financial sector.
The event provided an opportunity for participants to examine the implications of Hungary’s political transition within the broader context of EU–Korea economic relations and the future of Korean investment in Europe.
