Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at Korea University had invited Dr. Simon Hix for a special lecture on April 20th, 2023. Dr. Hix is a renowned scholar in European Studies in EUI. The lecture was about the future of UK-EU relationship after the Brexit. Students interested in foreign policy of the EU and the future of UK came for the lecture. The discussion evolved from the Brexit agreement to the economic effects of Brexit. The UK is suffering from a huge economic loss after the Brexit. In a counterfactual situation, UK's economy should be recovered far better than current status; The single market exit had taken a toll in UK economy. The public opinion had shifted as well. While public opinion was split on Brexit with small margin of people choosing Brexit, the opinion changed since they witnessed the huge loss. From 2021, more people answered that Britain's referendum on Brexit was a wrong choice. But the deal is only the new beginning as UK is constantly trying to seek a new equilibrium on the situation. The deals for highly skilled workers and service sectors could alleviate the situation, which would be under scrutiny for a while. By the end of the session, the Q&A was led by Professor Jae-Seung Lee, where students from various backgrounds asked and shared their opinions on Brexit.
