In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and the European Union (EU), Korea University's Jean Monnet EU Centre of Excellence hosted a distinguished lecture series on 31st of October at at International Studies Hall #115, Korea University. The event featured Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, as the guest speaker. More than 80 Distinguished attendees included president of KU, professors, ambassadors, diplomats, and students, who gathered to engage in a dynamic discussion on EU-Korea economic and trade relations.
The lecture series began with opening remarks from Professor Lee, Jae-Seung, the Director of the Jean Monnet EU Centre of Excellence. Professor Lee highlighted the significance of the event, emphasizing its role in commemorating six decades of partnership between Korea and the EU. He set the stage for the discussion, underlining the importance of economic and trade collaboration between the two entities.
President Dong-One Kim of Korea University followed with congratulatory remarks, articulating the KUJMCE’s commitment to fostering international partnerships and academic excellence. President Kim also congratulated EU’s Centre for hosting such a distinguished event and Korea University’s dedication to promoting meaningful dialogue and cooperation with EU.
The highlight of the event was Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis's comprehensive lecture on EU-Korea economic and trade relations. Mr. Dombrovskis began by addressing critical regional security issues, highlighting Korea's role in supporting EU efforts in international crises such as the Ukrainian war. He then delved into economic security by outlining key principles such as promoting economic competitiveness, adhering to a rules-based multilateral operating system, and emphasizing digital trade and decarbonization. Green and digital partnerships emerged as focal points, with Mr. Dombrovskis highlighting Korea's role in EU's digital and green transitions. He stressed the alignment of efforts between the EU and Korea in decarbonizing their economies and pursuing cooperation in strategic green energy projects.
The event included a lively question and answer session, providing attendees, including students, professors, ambassadors, and representatives from various embassies, with the opportunity to engage directly with the guest speaker. The interactive dialogue on the agendas like the digital trade and its impact on the Korean enterprises, CBAM, and EU’s efforts towards multilateralism further enriched the discussion. Overall, the Distinguished Lecture Series served as a valuable platform for attendees to gain insights into EU-Korea economic and trade relations.
