The EU Society at Korea University’s Graduate School of International Studies with the support of the Erasmus+ Programme published first journal. This issue represents a collaborative academic effort involving scholars from Korea University and Curtin University. It reflects the continued work of the Jean Monnet EU Centre of Excellence in fostering interdisciplinary research and global academic exchange.

The inaugural issue of the Journal of European Union Society (JEUS) explores the theme of enhancing sustainable development partnerships between the European Union and the Republic of Korea, within the broader global effort to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key Themes and Contributions of the journal included:

  • EU Sustainability Policy Developments (Post-2023)
A comprehensive analysis of major EU policy shifts, including the revision of the Emissions Trading System (ETS), the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), highlighting the EU’s leadership in climate governance and green transition.

  • Comparative Global Approaches to SDGs
The issue provides a comparative study of sustainability strategies adopted by the European Union, Australia, South Korea, and the United States, illustrating how different political and economic contexts shape SDG implementation.

  • Australia’s Sustainability Framework
An in-depth review of Australia’s policies, including the Net Zero Plan, Reef 2050 Plan, and Critical Minerals Strategy, emphasizing the balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability.

  • South Korea’s SDG Policy Developments
Analysis of Korea’s recent initiatives in renewable energy, social welfare reform, biodiversity protection, and gender equality, while addressing challenges in achieving long-term sustainability targets.

  • U.S. Policy Shifts and Global Implications
A critical examination of recent U.S. developments, including policy reversals in climate commitments and their implications for global sustainability efforts and international cooperation.

Issue No. 1 offers a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective on global sustainability governance, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in achieving the SDGs by 2030. While highlighting the European Union’s regulatory leadership, the journal also underscores the diverse challenges faced by key global actors in balancing economic priorities, environmental commitments, and geopolitical realities.

By bringing together regional and global perspectives, this issue sets the foundation for future research on EU–Korea relations and sustainable development partnerships.
