The EU Society at Korea University held its second session of Fall 2024 on September 24, opening with a warm welcome and words of appreciation from the leadership to all participants. The session featured a presentation by Arina Reshetilova titled “Echoes of Conflict: How World War I and II Shaped Art.” In her talk, Arina examined how both world wars impacted the development of art, focusing on key artistic movements and figures that emerged in response to these conflicts. She emphasized the grim reality faced by young soldiers, who were sent into the chaos of war without adequate experience or training to operate the advanced weaponry of their time. Additionally, she discussed the crucial role of propaganda art and posters during both World War I and II.
The discussion among EU society members explored various forms of artistic expression and censorship throughout history. It examined how Soviet writers, facing government repression, were forced into subtlety, stopped writing, or even committed suicide. Nazi Germany's architecture was designed to evoke smallness and compliance in individuals, while graffiti art in America emerged as a rebellious form of urban self-expression against social injustices.
At the end of the session, members were invited to join the next meeting, which will focus on an important economic topic: the EU’s Budget.
