The second session of the EU Society began with a presentation titled: “Digital Diplomacy in the EU” by Kenza Kazzou.
Kenza provided an overview of how digital diplomacy operates through both top-down (government-led) and bottom-up (citizen, IT groups, and NGO-driven) approaches in the EU. The discussion covered key objectives, including securing and protecting strategic interests and promoting a framework for inclusive transformation. Kenza also explored the role of governments and policymakers in leading digital diplomacy and highlighted various engagement strategies such as social media outreach, countering disinformation, crisis communication, and public awareness campaigns. Throughout the presentation, Kenza actively engaged participants by posing questions, such as asking if members can spot digital diplomacy efforts and which is more important and influential top-down or bottom-up approach in digital diplomacy, encouraging discussion, and fostering an interactive exchange of ideas. This led to a discussion on how digital diplomacy benefits global engagement and real-time crisis response while also facing challenges like misinformation, cyber threats, and unequal digital access. A part of the session focused on the impact of social media, particularly how platforms like Twitter have changed diplomatic interactions, using the example of the U.S. President’s online presence and its influence on international relations.
After the session, members were asked if they would like to participate in a special Eurovision viewing in May. As well as encouraged to participate in presenting throughout the semester.
