On June 22, the first session of the summer course, <Contemporary Europe> was held. Professor Jae-Seung Lee hosted the session, giving introduction to the course and the European Union. As the overview of the EU, students learned about the pioneers of the institution, official languages, members and candidates. The EU is the symbol of Europe’s integration in economy and politics to promote peace and prosperity in the region. It is the largest economic union and single market with the currency (euro). They share the major institutions such as banking system, investment, and common foreign policy. The freedom to move within the EU’s border and exchange educational programs are a few examples of the EU’s integration. The supranational characteristic of the EU clash with the nation’s sovereignty, which are adjusted through EU council, parliament, and various institutions.
