The first two sessions of the final week of the program were conducted by Professor Chang Rhyong Oh. In the first session, he examined the rise of far-right parties in Europe, with a particular focus on the Belgian case of the cordon sanitaire. The discussion explored regional divisions within Belgian politics, the debate between separatism and confederalism, and the factors contributing to the growth of far-right parties in the country. Professor Oh also analyzed the strategic responses of mainstream parties, the resulting democratic tensions, and public perceptions of right-wing politics. Overall, the session provided a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of far-right politics in Belgium and their broader implications for European democracy.
